How to Wet Seeds in Sandustry — Seed Automation Guide
Make Wet Seeds with the current 1:1 recipe, understand why they suspend in Water, and troubleshoot high-volume seed wetting and clogs.
Officially Documented: The Wet Seed Recipe
The current official reaction is:
1 Seed + 1 Water → 1 Wet Seed
The Water is absorbed and the Seed converts into Wet Seed. Wet Seed can then be placed on a Planter Box to grow a Flower.
Older Demo guides that refer to Spore or Wet Spore are not the current Early Access naming.
Officially Documented: Why Wet Seeds Float or Hang in Water
Wet Seed is listed at density 100. Water is also density 100.
That equal density means Wet Seeds can remain suspended in Water instead of reliably sinking to the bottom. The Official Wiki explicitly describes this as a reason effective Wet Seed production can be difficult.
Do not design a high-throughput system on the assumption that every Wet Seed will fall neatly out of a deep tank.
Community-Tested: High-Volume Wetting
Recent player discussions in late August 2026 repeatedly describe seed wetting as a throughput bottleneck. Working layouts differ, but they share a few practical ideas:
- keep the Water buffer from completely flooding the exit area;
- use Launchers, Clearing Frames, or other movement tools to stop Wet Seed from accumulating in the tank;
- recycle any dry Seed that passes through without reacting;
- parallelize small wetting cells instead of making one extremely deep reservoir.
These are community-tested patterns, not official recipes. Layouts are sensitive to water level, geometry, and throughput.
A recent community thread specifically reports a system failing once the lower buffer filled with Water, while another discussion recommends using the tendency of Wet Seed to remain suspended as part of the transport design.
Officially Documented: Filter Reaction Jams
Be careful when Seed and Water meet inside a Filter.
The Official Wiki says a pixel that changes into a new material while passing through a Filter can become stuck if the new material no longer matches the Filter rule. Seed turning into Wet Seed is one of the examples it gives.
A safer architecture is usually:
sort dry Seed → controlled wetting chamber → move Wet Seed away
rather than combining sorting and wetting in the same Filter body.
Needs Verification: The “Best” Seed Washer Layout
There is no single official high-volume Wet Seed layout documented in the sources checked.
Claims such as:
- one exact tank depth is always optimal;
- a specific number of Pumps guarantees throughput;
- one community blueprint cannot clog;
should remain Needs verification unless reproduced in the current build under sustained load.
Planting Wet Seed
When Wet Seed touches a Planter Box it grows into a Flower.
The official v0.5.6 changelog added two useful current-version clarifications:
- shooting or digging at a growing seedling now tries to convert it back to Wet Seeds;
- a seedling stuck between buildings can give up and try to convert back to Wet Seeds;
- the developer states that one Wet Seed is intended to convert into exactly one Flower. If a seedling grows through additional Wet Seeds, it consumes them and tries to produce one Flower for each Wet Seed consumed, which can look like runaway growth without creating material from nothing.
Those changes remain part of the current v0.5.7 behavior checked for this guide.
Keep the planting area separate from the wetting chamber so Water management, floating Wet Seed, and Flower output do not become one combined bottleneck.
